The Meaning Inside
As far as meaning and
poetry are concerned, I believe that it is making a choice about the
matter that is truly important. There seems to be three ways this could
go.
Option 1:
Choose to give it meaning
Option 2: Choose to not give it meaning Option 3: Choose to let it tell you it’s meaning.
Option 2: Choose to not give it meaning Option 3: Choose to let it tell you it’s meaning.
As per usual,
nothing in the realm of expression, art, or the world, is black and white.
Therefore, the choice is truly up to the person who is creating the piece.
For me
personally, when it comes to poetry, I often value meaning and consider it of
central important, hence it is not unusual that I choose to give it meaning, or
let it tell me its meaning. It is not unlikely that through the development of
the meaning it can change, and morph.
All of this is true of
art and poetry alike, however I believe that in visual arts, there is a bigger
spectrum for “decorative” art with seemingly little to no meaning. Contrary to
popular belief, I actually think that the choice of making something
decorative, in itself, has meaning.
As far as discovering or deciphering
the meaning of a poem or a piece of artwork, I think one needs to not focus so
hard on what the other was trying to say, and let it speak to you in whatever
way it may. That way it can carry a deeper resonance within the viewer, rather
than just spending endless hours and effort trying to decode the meaning it had
to the author, which in the end might have no personal reward or importance.
